Our Work

The Trust has a comprehensive coastal conservation programme. Measures include the following:

  • Habitat restoration: The Trust’s work involves the conservation of yellow-eyed penguin breeding habitats.
  • Predator control: Introduced predatory mammals pose a serious threat to all New Zealand birds.
  • Research projects: A variety of research projects have been undertaken to learn more about the penguins.
  • Threats: In New Zealand, one thousand years ago humans brought with them many threats to add to the penguins’ plight.
  • Nursery: The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust established a plant nursery in 1989 with the purpose of growing plants for revegetating yellow-eyed penguin habitats.
  • Education: The Trust provides information to the public on penguin conservation, and advocates for its ongoing protection.
