Yellow-eyed penguins, which can travel daily up to 15 km from shore to feeding grounds, feed mainly at the edge of the continental shelf.

They have been found in fishing nets set at 100 m depth.

Food consists of six main species of small fish, usually less than 20cm long:

  • red cod
  • opal fish
  • sprat
  • silversides
  • ahuru
  • blue cod

They also eat squid.
